What’s New for the 2020 Ford Explorer?

Orange County car shoppers from Fullerton to Placentia have always loved the Ford Explorer. The SUV's flexibility and comfort have proved convincing over years. But now, there's even more to get excited about.

The Explorer has received its first complete redesign in nearly a decade with the 2020 model year. A thorough redesign has touched on the Explorer's looks, performance, and more.

Fresh Looks

The 2020 Explorer isn't a drastic departure when it comes to styling, but there are certainly new elements at play. Ford has opted for a similar overall shape to the previous model, but individual features like the headlamps, taillights, and trim pieces have been updated with a more contemporary look. In general, the 2020 Explorer has a sportier appearance than the previous generation.

Rear-Wheel Drive Architecture

The previous fifth-generation Explorer broke with tradition and used a primarily front-wheel drive design. With the new sixth-generation, Ford has returned the SUV to its rear-wheel drive roots. This move contributes to the model's improved towing and sportier handling.

New Trims

A pair of new trim levels mark some firsts for the Explorer. Ford is introducing a new Explorer ST model for 2020 with heightened focus on performance. In particular, the Explorer ST gets an upgraded version of the 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine with 400 horsepower.

Also newly available is the Explorer Hybrid. This model will offer the 3.3-liter V6 paired with an electric motor. The two make a combined 318 horsepower.
